Further Information
The course "Basics of Electrical Engineering for Mechatronic Systems" will be offered by theTeaching and Research Area Mechatronics in Mobile Propulsion starting in summer semester 2023. It is addressed to students of Mechanical Engineering and Machine Technology (Teacher Training) in the 2nd semester (Bachelor) as well as students of Computer Science as an elective subject. The course is also addressed to students of Automation Engineering in the 2nd semester (Master). In addition to the lecture, we will offer a global exercise and a small group exercise to strengthen the knowledge acquired.
Mechanical engineering thrives on moving equipment, stationary - machine tools or robots - and mobile - driverless transport systems or automobiles. These plants are based on the three pillars of mechanics, electronics and software. The electrical drives used in these systems and their control serve as a "red thread" for the presentation of basic physical principles and lead from electrical engineering fundamentals via electrodynamic energy converters to electronic control technology, which together with measurement technology is an important prerequisite for automation technology. The lecture is intended to provide mechanical engineering students with a fundamental, in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering. Furthermore, especially the interfaces to mechanics and software shall be presented and clarified.
Consultation hours
- One date per week: Fri. 10:30 – 11:30 am (Forckenbeckstraße 4, 52074 Aachen or Teams meeting)
- Advance registration necessary! Number of research assistants will be adjusted according to registrations. Registration by mail to: orga-gems@mmp.rwth-aachen.de
- Content of the mail: Date of the consultation hours, preferred format (face-to-face or Teams meeting) and short thematic classification
- Consultation hours are offered during the summer and winter semesters
Lecture
-
In the first lectures, the basic electrical quantities are introduced in order to lay the foundations for the understanding of direct current networks. Subsequently, the electrical phenomena such as magnetic field, Lorentz force, induction, etc. are dealt with in order to be able to explain transformers and electrical machines with the help of these concepts. The lecture concludes with the consideration of AC networks and electric motors, as well as the basics of signal processing and semiconductor devices.
-
The lecture is divided into two blocks (90 min. and 45 min.).
-
The lecture is supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jakob Andert.
-
The lecture is offered exclusively in the summer semester.
Global Exercise
- To reinforce the contents of our lectures, global exercises are offered, where computational problems are calculated or theoretical questions are discussed under guidance of scientific staff. The exercises will be made available via the e-examination system Dynexite prior to the respective exercise dates. A link to the module in Dynexite can also be found in the Moodle learning room of this course..
- The global exercise will be held as a 90 min. event and will take place 1x per week.
- It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the tasks in advance.
- Currently the global exercise is supervised by Florian Tidau.
- The global exercise is offered exclusively in the summer semester.
Small Group Exercises
- To further intensify the contents taught in the lecture, small group exercises (KGÜ) are offered in addition to the global exercises. In these exercises, students solve computational problems independently. Subsequently, tutors present the solution of the problems and answer questions. The exercises are provided via the e-examination system Dynexite.
- The small group exercise takes place several times during the week. The dates for the different groups of the KGÜs can be found in RWTHonline. Here you have the possibility to enroll for the KGÜs by assigning preferences. Please assign a preference for all available groups. Please note that we can only securely offer you a place in the KGÜ if you have registered in advance.
- The small group exercise is offered exclusively in the summer semester.
Exam
- The exam will be conducted as a digital format via the e-exam system Dynexite on computers of the RWTH
- The exam takes place in several cohorts in different computer rooms
- The exam is offered in summer and winter semesters
- Allowed resources: All calculators that are on the positive list (https://moodle.rwth-aachen.de/mod/resource/view.php?id=1279983). The collection of formulas is a double-sided DIN A4 sheet, which has to be prepared by the students themselves. Any form of printout is not permitted. This also includes printouts that were originally digitally handwritten on a tablet or a comparable device. We would like to advise that any disregard will lead to an attempt at cheating and subsequently to failure of the exam.
- The exam is scheduled to take place on 22.09.2023
- The duration of the exam is 120 minutes
Dates
- The module is offered in the summer semester.
- The dates, time frame and location of the lectures/exercises/small group exercises can be found in RWTHonline and in the respective learning room in RWTHmoodle.
-
The exam is scheduled to take place on September 22, 2023.
